The University of Hawai`i at Manoa Center for Pacific Islands Studies has opened a search for an assistant/associate professor of Pacific Islands studies. The position announcement is below. The closing date for applications is 4 April 2008.


Assistant/Associate Professor (Pacific Islands studies), position number 82138, University of Hawai`i at Manoa, Center for Pacific Islands Studies, School of Pacific and Asian Studies, tenure track, 9-month, full-time, general funds, to begin Fall 2008 (08/2008) or Spring 2009 (01/2009), pending position clearance and availability of funds. Duties: Develop and teach interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate courses on issues of social change in the contemporary Pacific Islands; share in advising of students; participate in the Center's community outreach activities; conduct research or other scholarly activities; publish in appropriate media; and perform university and professional service. Minimum qualifications: Assistant: PhD from a college or university of recognized standing in the Social Sciences or Humanities with emphasis on Pacific Islands Studies. Extensive knowledge of and research experience in the Pacific Islands region outside of Hawai`i. Ability to speak, read and write one or more Pacific languages. Associate: Same as assistant plus minimum of four years full-time college or university teaching at the rank of assistant professor or equivalent, and a demonstrated record of excellence in scholarly and/or literary achievement. Desirable qualifications: Publications in refereed journals. Evidence of innovative, interdisciplinary research and teaching. Ability to promote understanding of the Pacific Islands region, particularly Melanesia, through teaching, research, and community service. Pay range: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
